Batteries That Keep the Valley Powered When the Grid Drops

Standard solar shuts off in an outage. A battery set up for backup can keep the essentials running when the grid goes down — no fuel, no generator to start. SoL Energy designs Enphase IQ Battery 10C storage for new solar and retrofits across the Roaring Fork Valley. Local crew since 2003.

First question

Who sends your electric bill?

Holy Cross and Xcel both charge more for power in the evening peak on their Time-of-Use rates. Solar makes power at midday; a battery saves it for the evening peak.

Xcel Energy

Most Xcel homes in Colorado are now on Time-of-Use billing by default — peak hours are 5–9pm weekdays, year-round.

Why add storage in the Roaring Fork Valley

Mountain weather and winter storms make outages more than a theoretical problem. Grid-tied solar alone is designed to shut down when the utility is down, to protect line workers.

Solar makes power at midday; a battery saves it for the evening peak, or for the hours the grid is down.

On Holy Cross? Holy Cross pays members to share their home battery (Power+FLEX). Members choose one path: Time-of-Use or Power+FLEX. We'll help you pick.

We size storage to your critical-load list and budget — lights, heat, refrigeration, well pumps, wifi — not a one-size brochure kit. New solar plus storage, battery-ready solar, or a battery added to the system you already have.

Existing solar? Many systems can add storage after a site and electrical review.

Xcel Energy: most homes are already on Time-of-Use

Most Xcel homes in Colorado are now on Time-of-Use billing by default. Peak hours are 5–9pm on non-holiday weekdays, year-round. All other hours, weekends and holidays are off-peak.

A battery that covers the weekday evening peak lets you use your own stored solar instead of peak-priced grid power.

Glenwood Springs & Aspen: different rules

Inside Glenwood Springs city limits, power comes from the city's own flat rate — no Time-of-Use pricing today.

Parts of Aspen are served by the City of Aspen's own electric utility; others by Holy Cross. We'll help you check what applies to your address.

Battery questions

Will a battery work in a Colorado winter? Yes, when specified and installed correctly. We design for the local climate and set realistic expectations for winter performance.

How big a battery do I need? It depends on which circuits you want to keep alive and for how long. We build a critical-load list with you and size from there. Warranty terms for your equipment are spelled out in your contract.

Backup power, whatever utility sends your bill

A battery set up for backup can keep the essentials running when the grid goes down — no fuel, no generator to start.
